An Introduction to Open Access Institutional Repositories

Summary

Many universities and other organizations either have in place or are piloting their own institutional repository (available on the web). Essentially these are databases for work produced by staff and in some cases students. In this tutorial we will present information concerning the implications of open access, authors copyright issues, publishing options in the future and the possible benefits of using a repository as a valuable marketing tool for authors work, and as showcases for an organizations output. Following a presentation there will be the opportunity for discussion. For authors and those involved in promoting academic output who want to learn more about open access, copyright issues, publishing options, and making the most of institutional repositories.

Presenter Biography

A former senior lecturer at Glyndwr University, Misha became the Repository Development Officer on the new Glyndwr University Research Online open access repository in July 2009. An enthusiastic advocate of open access, advisor to researchers, involved in promoting research via various medium including the use of the web (incl. social media). Member of the United Kingdom Council of Research Repositories (UKCoRR) and winner of the Welsh Repository Network (WRN) prize for Open Access in 2010, entitled “an advocacy campaign that caused impact at a senior level”. Misha has presented at the Wales Higher Education Libraries Forum (WHELF) / The Higher Education Wales Information Technology forum (HEWIT) Gregynog Colloquium in 2010. Her advocacy material is currently used as a resource for both UK and US Repository Managers.
